What seminaries does DG recommend?

By DG Staff January 23, 2006

The following seminaries offer an excellent, God-centered education. This list is not intended to be exhaustive, but as a pointer to what we consider to be some of the top seminaries.

1. The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, located in Louisville, KY. A large number of professors at this seminary explicitly share our beliefs concerning the providence of God, election, the glory of God, and Christian Hedonism. Well-known professors include Tom Schreiner, Bruce Ware, Al Mohler, and Tom Nettles.

2. Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, located in Deerfield, IL. Trinity is known for providing a top-notch education. Professors include D. A. Carson, William VanGemeren, Steve Roy, and Kevin Vanhoozer.

3. Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, FL. Professors include John Frame, Bruce Waltke, and Richard Pratt. RTS also has campuses in Jackson, MS and Charlotte, NC. RTS is explicitly devoted to educating in the Reformed tradition, and hence all of the faculty hold to Reformed theology as set forth in the Westminster Confession and the Larger and Shorter Catechisms.

4. Covenant Theological Seminary, located in St. Louis, MO. Faculty include Bryan Chapell and Robert Peterson. Covenant is the national seminary of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), and thus is also devoted to educating in the Reformed tradition. The faculty and Board of Trustees subscribe to the Westminster Confession of Faith.

5. Westminster Theological Seminary, in Philadelphia, PA is also devoted to educating students in the Reformed tradition.

6. Westminster Seminary California is in Escondido, CA with full-time professor Michael Horton.

7. Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Boston, MA. This seminary has a strong OT department and a significant understanding of the importance of reaching the world with the gospel.

8. Wheaton College Graduate School, while not a seminary (and hence not offering M.Div. degrees), provides an excellent program for those seeking a Master of Arts in Biblical & Theological studies. An excellent Ph.D. program is also beginning here. Faculty include Greg Beale, Scott Hafemann, Paul House, and Doug Moo.

9. The Bethlehem Institute, located in Minneapolis, MN, is a church-based, Masters-level apprenticeship program out of the church where John Piper pastors, Bethlehem Baptist. It is designed to provide those who are enrolled in a seminary degree program (or planning to enroll in one) the equivalent of about 40 semester hours of coursework. One year of Greek is required as a prerequisite.
