John Piper contends that Biblical exegesis that does not touch the emotions of the exegete, and through him the emotions of others, is ultimately a failure because it does not mediate the effect which the Scripture ought to have--to give hope (Romans 15:4). Transforming the stupor of our worldly and futile affections into a deep and glad and living hope is the ultimate goal of the exegetical tool known as "arcing," which Piper unpacks for us here.
