Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die
For the last 4 years, the staff at Desiring God teamed up with thousands of you to distribute 1.97 million copies of the book, Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die.
The book was originally released to coincide with Mel Gibson’s film, The Passion of the Christ, which provided Christians an excellent opportunity to explain the gospel. The response has been encouraging: 1.5 million copies were given away in 2004, followed by another 150,000 in 2005, 175,000 in 2006, and 150,000 in 2007.
The book has a new title. We believe simply calling it Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die will be more helpful in helping Christians and non-Christians understand the reasons for the cross.
So again we are inviting you to partner with us in spreading the gospel during the Easter Season. Here’s how:
Easter Outreach Special Offer
- If you agree, your church or organization agrees, to give Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die away for FREE, then we’ll make cases available to you for a suggested donation of $140.00 per case—and that includes shipping. This offer is for case lots only.
- Each case contains 108 books (about $1 per book and $32 for shipping). If you can afford to donate more—great! If you can’t afford $140.00, then we will accept whatever you can afford. If God gives you a vision for distributing these books, we trust that he will supply the funding to get them out.
- Easter is March 23, 2008 and this offer is good through March 31, 2008, or while our supply lasts, whichever comes first.

Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die is:
- Only 122 pages long (each chapter only 1 ½ pages), so it can be read in short intervals;
- Written so that both Christians and non-Christian readers sense the book is addressing them (because it is!). It is at once both devotional and evangelistic.
Ideas for How to Use the Book
- Invite some friends to share a case with you to distribute to friends and family.
- Invite people over to your home to view the file The Passion of the Christ and give them each a copy of Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die as a gift.
- Create an Easter gift basket for your neighbors and include a copy of the book.
- Lead your small group through a discussion of select chapters of the book.
- Teach through select chapters of the book in your Sunday School class.
- Use the free Leader’s Guide we’ve developed to help you lead discussion.
- Give copies to your co-workers with a personal letter from you.
- Churches:
- Give copies to visitors each Sunday morning throughout the Lenten season.
- Make copies available to your people for outreach.
- Send copies to all of the missionaries you support as an Easter gift.
- Organize your own showing of Mel Gibson’s film, or the Jesus film, or your own Passion play and give copies to all who attend.
- College Ministries: give out copies to all students who attend your outreach events.
- High School Ministries: don’t assume your high school students really understand the gospel. Give each a copy of the book and lead them through select chapters.
When you give this book away, you are giving a substantial gift. You are giving the gospel. What this book speaks of is beautiful and precious beyond measure.
