Are You Too Drunk to Pray?

For many of us, the hardest part of the day is staying sober. We go into work as sharp-dressed, productive drunks — or we crash on the couch after work, turn on Netflix, and get hammered until bed. Even Christian pastors find it hard not to get intoxicated, even while preparing a sermon or writing a Bible study curriculum. “The end of all things is at hand,” Peter said (1 Peter 4:7). The end is near. But we are not paying attention. We work and play, eat and drink, go to church and school, while stumbling inebriated through it all.

The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. (1 Peter 4:7)

Stay sober: pray. This is the most important part of your day — not working frantically to “do, do, do” before the time runs out, but to come to Jesus and ask for his help. God doesn’t need productive workers to get his work done for him. He wants his children humbly to rest in him in all things. This starts for us in prayer.
