We’ve taken Solid Joys to a new level.

As of today, we are happy to announce that our daily devotional app is no longer restricted to Apple and Android mobile devices, but is now a fully functional website. We’re hoping many will find this to be a tremendous blessing.

The new Solid Joys site is simple, and easy to use, and features 365 of the best devotional excerpts from John Piper's online writings and from his “trilogy” of books with Multnomah (Desiring God, The Pleasures of God, and Future Grace). The devotional of the day automatically comes up when you visit the site at http://solidjoys.desiringGod.org, and you can click easily to the preceeding or following day’s reading.

Presidential Inaugurations and the Providence of God

At his second inauguration, Abraham Lincoln stood before a nation in civil war, deeply divided over great moral and political issues.

Citizens of both North and South feared God and thought they were in the right, but God had not yet given victory to either side. Rather, the war raged on at great cost to both.

What would Lincoln say to this polarized nation in the midst of such sorrow, anger, and confusion?

At the Outset of Lincoln’s Second

Rather than use his address to muster nationalistic pride, commend himself, or boast in his plans for the future, Lincoln turned his mind, and those of his hearers, to the will of God.

“The Almighty has His own purposes,” Lincoln said. Then, …

The Original "Desiring God" Sermon Series

Before it ever referred to a book or organization, "Desiring God" was the name of a sermon series preached by John Piper in the Fall of 1983.

The common theme in the series is what Piper controversially called "Christian Hedonism," a philosophy of life based on the biblical conviction that God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him. Piper wrote and preached the series in order to define Christian Hedonism and demonstrate how it is essential to the way Christians worship, pray, approach missions, handle money, and more.

Alongside the original English manuscripts, we now have translations of the entire "Desiring God" sermon series available in three additional lang…

Surf Our Site in 10 Languages

If desiringGod.org existed solely as an English website, we would have the potential to reach effectively only about 6% of the world's population.

That's because less than 400 million people speak English natively.1 It is true that English continues to become a more global language, that increasing millions speak it, at some level, as a second language. But second language learning — especially about God and his word — is something we can't settle with (this article explains why).

So in order to reach beyond the English language bubble, we have been in the process of creating translated "versions" of our website. These versions enable people to access and navigate our translated reso…

Free eBook in 4 Languages—"Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ"

In his book Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ, John Piper answers the simple question "Who was Jesus?" He does this by writing chapters on what the Bible says about Jesus' deity, gladness, anguish, resurrection, and more.

The book was written as a follow up to the free ebook we featured two weeks ago, Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die.

Download Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ in one of these 4 languages:

  1. English

  2. Hindi – मसीह यीशु को निहारना और रसास्वाधन करना

  3. Persian – ديدن و چشيدن عيسى مسيح

  4. Russian – Видя и наслаждаясь Иисусом Христом

Offering free translated ebooks is one way we're trying to spread globally the good news that God is most g…

New Translations, Free for the World

It's been a long time since our last update on what translations we've been adding to this website. But God has continued to provide us resources, and we wanted to announce at least a few of those that have come in recently.

As always, you can visit our language index to see all the resources we have in any particular language.

Oh, and don't forget the translated versions of our website (we added Persian just this week!). You can access all eight of them by mousing over the "International" button at the top right of our website.

Here's just a sampling of what we've posted recently:

Happy International Women's Day

You may have noticed today's Google Doodle commemorating International Women's Day (IWD). It has been celebrated every year on March 8th for almost a century now.

Setting aside a day to more publicly celebrate and honor women, as well as to advocate for more equality in their rights and treatment, is a God-honoring, good thing. But, as Mary Kassian notes in her post today, there is an unfortunate assumption among most advocates of IWD that for women to be treated as equals among men, they must be treated the same. In other words, their roles and responsibilities must be interchangeable.

Mary responds to this assumption with an insightful word for both men and women:

Translation Is Not an Option

English is the most dominant global language ever. So why are we at Desiring God doing so much work to translate our resources into other tongues? Why not just spend the same amount of time, money, and effort teaching people to read our English resources rather than doing the hard (and sometimes messy) work of translation?

To answer this and other questions about translation, I've written an article titled "A Justification for Translation." It is mainly an attempt to distill the wisdom that scholars Andrew Walls and Lamin Sanneh have shared on the subject.

If you're pressed for time and just want the main idea, here's an outline:

  1. Translation is essential to the Christian faith because it
