India is mammoth — so big that North Americans don’t usually have the categories to appreciate population size and density like this. With the people of India now exceeding 1.2 billion, Hindi, the official language, has been rising quickly on our list of priorities for translation.
So it is with great excitement and gratitude to God that we announce the release of a version of our website in Hindi.
In Hindi, For Joy
The church in India is in a remarkable season of growth. In line with our mission and with the Lord's help, we want to serve these saints with our content. Desiring God exists to help people everywhere understand and embrace the truth that God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him.
Our Hindi website features a fully translated navigation and 37 resources, including two Hindi books and most of John Piper’s 52 Key Sermons (with the remaining to be added in the months ahead).
The Importance of Hindi
India has amazing linguistic diversity. Ethnologue identifies 452 different mother tongues. However, there are two languages that enjoy special prominence.
As a result of approximately 300 years of British colonial presence, English is widely spoken in India as a second language. It even serves as the language of choice for official communication. Hindi, however, is the first official language and the most widely spoken native language.
India selected Hindi, written in the Devanagari script, as its official language after gaining its independence in 1947. Hindi is a register, or particular variety, of the Hindustani language. This is also the case with Urdu, the official language of Pakistan, which means that in terms of grammar and phonology, Hindi and Urdu are nearly identical. Their only major difference is that Urdu is traditionally written in a Perso-Arabic script instead of Devanagari. Taken together, the Hindi-Urdu language group is the fifth largest language in the world.
Our prayer is that this new version of our website would bless many. If you speak Hindi, or know anyone who does, please help us spread the word about this new resource.
