To the World with Facebook
Facebook surpassed one billion active users today. It’s an astounding figure — one seventh of the world’s total population. That’s almost 15%. It’s a number greater than the populations of North and South America combined. You could view the marking of this milestone in a couple of ways: as an obstruction, or as an opportunity. It could make you cringe, or it could make you dream of gospel possibilities.
You could fret the massive amounts of wasted time and self-absorption that flow through these channels. Or you could feel amazed at the potential for good, for connecting people for the sake of Jesus, for spreading biblical truth, for the glory of God, for redemption, for healing of broken souls, for rebuilding crumbling worldviews.
At Desiring God, we think gospel advance. We see gospel possibilities. Our aim is to spread biblical truth.
DG Friending Facebook
The mission of Desiring God is to help people everywhere understand and embrace the truth that God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him. We aim to use social media in a way that helps others enjoy God.
Our vision at Desiring God is global. Our desire is to make it as easy as possible for non-English readers worldwide to be able to access and interact with our content, and then spread it among their peers through their social networks. Increasingly, the way content is consumed and spread on the Internet is through social-media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.
Where We Are—And Where We’re Headed
Currently, Desiring God has almost a quarter-million Facebook followers in English, and over 15,000 of those are new in the last month.
In Spanish, we started our page less than two month ago, and it now has over 50,000 followers. Facebook has been the catalyst to higher levels of user interaction on our Spanish-language posts.
Portuguese is our newest start, with almost 5,000 followers in our first week.
We plan to launch a Facebook page in Korean in January. (Currently we are building-up our translations and developing a team of volunteer translators.) We also hope to launch an Arabic Facebook page in the Spring of 2013.
A Sobering Statistic—An Unprecedented Opportunity
So, as we watch Facebook crest the one billion user mark, we recognize that Internet technology and translated content must remain at that core of how we pursue the mission to which God has called us.
We want a number like one billion to sober us because of what it represents: a billion human souls for whom embracing Christ as their treasure has eternal consequences. This realization should make us tremble. But it should also fill our hearts with Holy Spirit resolve because the opportunity for gospel ministry via the Internet is unprecedented.
Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” (Matthew 28:18), and he has promised that his gospel would be “proclaimed throughout the whole world as testimony to all nations” (Matthew 24:14). There is not a single Facebook “Like” or “Friend” or “Poke” or “Status Update” that ever escapes his notice or is beyond his power to use for saving purposes. The risen, ruling Savior is rescuing souls and building his global church, in part, by the power of the gospel over the Internet.
As a web content ministry, this reality stokes our faith that the Lord could do a mighty work in the days ahead—wholly disproportionate to our small contribution—to reach a billion plus Facebook users and millions of others around the world with the glorious news that God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him.
Would you consider partnering with us in prayer and financial support as we seek to steward this amazing opportunity for the glory of God and the eternal joy of millions?
