Principle for Bible Reading
Meditate on the Opposites
One way to meditate on a text is to ask what the inverse or opposite is. For example, if you come across 1 Peter 5:8 and it tells you to be “sober-minded” and “watchful,” ask: what does it look like to not be drunken-minded and unwatchful?
- What does it mean to be “sober-minded” and “watchful” (1 Peter 5:8)? Is your life characterized by these terms?
- Where else does “sober-minded” occur in 1 Peter? How does this add to our understanding of what it means?
- Is a sober-minded, watchful life an anxious life of constantly looking out for the roaring devil? How do the surrounding verses help us answer this question?
