We’re now only five days from Advent, which begins this Sunday, December 1.
Just a few minutes of forethought today could go a long way in making this year special for your family, or spiritually significant for you personally.
One way to make the holidays sing is some kind of short daily devotional that can help prepare the hearts of you and yours for the weight of what we celebrate at Christmas in the incarnation of the Son of God. This is the greatest wonder of history’s many wonders — the coming of the eternal divine in frail, human flesh — something too remarkable to mark only one day. Advent is a way of lengthening the joy of Christmas, but only as we’re intentional and substantive in our extensions.
Among the many good ways of lengthening your Christmas with the love of Christ — whether a Jesse Tree or Advent calendar or something that comes with chocolates — we offer our humble little series of daily readings from John Piper, Good News of Great Joy. It’s available free from Desiring God in three electronic formats, or in a low-cost paperback through Amazon.
We don’t presume that this is for everyone, but if you don’t have another plan in place for this Advent, we’d love to have you give Piper’s short devotionals a try.
Our prayer is that God would use these readings to deepen and sweeten your adoration of Jesus this December and keep him as the center and greatest treasure of your Christmas season. The candles and candies have their place, but we want to make sure that in all the holiday rush and hubbub, we adore Jesus above all.
