Four Ways to Defend the Gospel

Philippians 1:15–18

Peter charges us to be ready in season and out of season to give a defense of the hope that is in us. In this lab, Pastor John prepares us with four ways to give a defense when the time comes.

Principle for Bible Reading

Meditate on Opposites

One way to meditate on a text is to ask what the inverse or opposite is. For example, what might it look like to not give a defense of the gospel?

Study Questions

  1. What does it mean to “defend the gospel” (Philippians 1:7, 15–18)? Why would it need defending? Have you ever done this?
  2. What four ways does Pastor John give us for how Paul defended the gospel? Do you agree? Can you add more?
  3. When was the last time that you pointed to Scripture to defend the truth of the gospel? When was the last time you pointed to your life as a defense of the power of the gospel?
