If God Afflicts You, Will You Curse Him?

Job 1:20–2:8

In this lab, John Piper reminds us that God does no one wrong in taking what he has given. Our response should always be like Job’s: “Blessed be your name.”

Some questions to ask as you read and study Job:

  1. Have you ever cursed God in your heart because of what you suffered? Have you ever been tempted to?
  2. Read Job 2:7–10. How might you have responded to a spouse who counseled that way if you were in Job’s affliction?
  3. Is there anyone whom you can encourage who is suffering right now? What encouragement can you offer that does not fall into the same error as Job’s wife?

Principle for Bible Reading

Both Wonderfully True

In this lab, Pastor John reminds us that if you are teaching, studying, or explaining a difficult text, and two interpretations could be correct, don’t be afraid to admit you’re not sure in that particular verse. Instead, show why both could be correct, and glory in the fact that regardless, both realities are true (if they are not contradictory interpretations and are both affirmed elsewhere in Scripture).
