One Word to Describe Jesus’s Life

Philippians 2:5–8

The Father and the Son were not in a Civil War to redeem humanity. They were in perfect harmony. In this lab, John Piper shows us how the Father sent the Son and how the Son went gladly.

Some questions to ask as you read and study Philippians 2:5–8:

  1. If given one word, how would you describe Jesus’s life? Why that word?
  2. Who was Jesus “obedient” to in Philippians 2:8? Does the verse entail obedience just in his death or does it describe his life as well?
  3. Would you describe your life as “obedient?” If yes, to who?

Principle for Bible Reading

Defining Terms in Context

Often, we come with our definitions of words before we understand what a verse or passage means. This can work at times, but we must not silence the passage itself. Rather, we must let it define what certain words mean. Words help us understand verses, and verses help us understand words.

So, as you read, take time to ask, “What can I learn about what this word means from the passage?”
