The great Artist who began his masterpiece in us will complete what he started. In this lab, John Piper reminds us that Christians will make it to the end because God is faithful to bring them home.
Principle for Bible Reading
Identify the Pronoun
A pronoun is a word that substitutes for a noun (a person, place, or thing) that has previously been mentioned. Sometimes a pronoun can refer back to an entire phrase instead of just one word.
Identify the pronouns in the Bible and figure out what they refer back to. Doing this consistently will make you a better interpreter of God’s word.
For example, Paul says, “I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6). Who does the “he” in this verse refer back to? It refers back to “God” in verse 3. This is crucial for understanding the meaning of this text. As the ultimate actor, God is the one who will finish what he started in all believers.
- Do you struggle with the idea that God’s faithfulness applies to you personally? Why or why not?
- What can we learn about eternal security from Philippians 1:6?
- How can you live differently this week in light of God’s faithfulness toward you?
