Introducing the New DesiringGod.org

What’s New About Our Site – The Full Tour

The goal of our website, as in all that we do, is to help you find your joy in God through Jesus Christ. A few years ago we determined that we could more effectively do this if we redesigned the site from the ground up. The result is the site that you are now using.

So what is new about our website? First, our new site is even easier to use, with improved navigation and organization. Second, our new site is filled with more content, giving you access to a more complete library of John Piper’s resources—including 25 years of audio sermons and weekly sermon videos.

Our New Site Is:

  • Easier to use, with improved organization and navigation.
  • Filled with more content, including 25 years of sermon audio and weekly sermon videos.
  • View the summary of this site tour.

The Site Is Easier to Use

We want you thinking hard about what we have to say in our sermons and messages—not about how to use our site. Therefore we sought to make the site well-organized, visually helpful, and uncluttered, so that access to our content would be quick, easy, intuitive and enjoyable. Here are some of the key benefits of the improved navigation and organization.

Always Know Where You Are

It’s no fun to be lost. Therefore the improved organization of the site is supported by navigation that stays with you throughout the site. The top navigation bar shows you the main sections of our site and will always be there. The side navigation shows you the contents of the particular section that you are in, and stays with you throughout that section. As a result, you will always know where you are in relation to the whole site.

Quickly Get from One Place to Another

The top navigation and side navigation enable you not only to know where you are, but also to quickly get from one place to another.

If you want to test this out, click into the screen shot to the left. You will find yourself in our “Resource Library” (a main site section) on the “Biographies” page. From that page, you can choose another resource category from the side navigation (such as “sermons,” “articles,” “online books,” and so forth), or use the top navigation to go to an entirely different section of the site (such as “Store” or “Events”).

Browse Our Content in Multiple Ways

You will find that our content is organized in a way that enables you to view it from multiple perspectives, and easily switch from one view to another.

For example, you can browse our sermons by date, Scripture text, series, topic, occasion, or title—all through a simple tabbed interface that allows you to easily switch from one view to another. Click into the screen shot on the left to see the “sermons by occasion” view, and then click on some of the other tabs to see how easily you can switch to a different view.

Discover A Lot of Related Content

There are over 1,600 resources in our Resource Library. So we not only wanted to improve the organization and navigation, we also wanted to point you to content that matches your interests. As a result, we typically list related resources and products on the side of each resource. We also list the topic for the resource on the right side, and if the resource is a part of a sermon series, we list the sermon series so you can easily go to the page where you will find everything from that series. When dealing with 1,600 resources, hopefully that helps makes it a little bit easier to find what you are looking for.

See What We Recommend and What Others are Viewing

Sometimes you may just want to see what resources we most highly recommend, recently added, or are most popular. So in both our Store and Resource Library, you will find what we are calling “highlight categories.” Click in to the screen shot on the left to see our “Essential Piper Resources” page, which shows what we recommend for getting to the heart of our most essential ideas.

Explore Our Improved Topic Index

We have reorganized our topic index to make it more helpful to you. The topic structure is re-organized in accord with principles of classification and, when possible, the traditional categories of theology and Christian living. Then we re-categorized all of our resources and incorporated all of them into the topic index (previously only a small portion of our resources were in the topic index). When you click into a topic, you will see not only the resources in that topic (organized by type), but also related topics, related products, and other related resources from yet other topics.

We see our topic index as an aid to helping you interpret and understanding our content more fully. And hopefully you will find some new topics you might not have thought about before!

Easily See Resources and Products in Other Languages

If you want to see what resources we have in other languages, just click on the language index in both the Store and the Resource Library. (You may also find the author index helpful for finding everything by a particular author.)

View Search Results in Tabs

We are introducing tabs in our search results to help make our search even more useful to you. The default tab is “all sections,” but you can click on any other tab to filter the results to just that section. For example, if you searched for “suffering and the sovereignty of God,” you could click the “Resource Library” tab to see messages from a recent conference we had on that topic, the “Store” tab to see more quickly the upcoming book and the audio CDs of the conference messages, and the “Events” tab to more quickly see the conference review page summarizing the conference. From that page, you can choose another resource category from the side navigation (such as “sermons,” “articles,” “online books,” and so forth), or use the top navigation to go to an entirely different section of the site (such as “Store” or “Events”).

Get More Information from Our Detailed Product Pages

In our Store, you will find more information to help you evaluate the products that are of interest to you. Our books now display their table of contents, and audio CD sets display the message titles included in the set. If a book is available online, we link to it so you can review it online before deciding whether to purchase it. You can watch video excerpts of our DVDs and listen to audio excerpts of some of our CDs. And you will find other related products, resources, and topics to help you find similar things of interest.

Purchase, Donate, and Register for Conferences

We worked hard to design a simple checkout-out process on the basis of fundamental usability principles. As a result, you will find it easier to purchase, register for a conference, and give (or do all three at once).

Set Up and Manage Your Account

We invite you to hit “ sign in” and set up an account. You will find it easier to set up your account and manage your information. Within your account you will also be able to view your transaction history.

Learn More About Who We Are

The reworked About Us section should make it easier for you to learn about our ministry, what we believe, and what we do. You may also be interested to view some of the testimonies we’ve received.

See Our Upcoming Conferences

It is now easier to see what conferences we have coming up and even browse through past conferences (listening to—and sometimes watching—the messages by conference).

An Improved Look

Obviously, any redesign involves an improved graphic look for the site, and ours is no different. We hope that you will find the look cleaner, more consistent, and more integrated. As you can also see from above, our redesign project was not solely about updating the look of the site. We hope that all of the above features, together with the improved look, combine to provide you an enjoyable and edifying experience on our site.

The Site Has More Content

In addition to better organized content and a more useful site, you will also find more content on our site. Here are some of the key highlights points of our new content.

Listen to 25 Years of Sermon Audio

The audio from all 25 years John Piper’s sermons is now online! We are still filling in some holes, but the bulk of the audio is now on our site and available to you free of charge.

Up until this point, you had to go to a different site to access our sermon audio, and most of it was not online. Now the audio is fully integrated into our site, and you can read, listen to, and watch messages all from the same interface. Click in to the sermon manuscript screen shot to the left and notice how you can listen or watch the sermon on that very page.

Watch Sermon Videos

You can now watch video of John Piper’s sermons as well! We began posting sermon videos on August 13, and you will continue to find the video each week along with the audio. Over the next several months, we will be posting our full video archive from the last three years. We invite you to click in to the image at the left and then click the “watch” link and see what an encouraging experience it is to be able to watch the sermons.

Use Our New Media Player

To help maximize your ability to access our media content, we have created a new media player that we think caps off all the new media content on our site. Notice how you can even switch between the audio and video version of the message through the tabs at the top.

Read Previously Unposted Writings

We have identified more than 200 articles and “missing” sermons that have not yet been posted on our site. We have worked several of them into the site already and will be posting all of them over the next four months.

Listen to Audio Questions and Answers

We have added additional questions and answers—many with short audio comments by John Piper. We will continue adding to these on a regular basis. Here are some that you might be interested in:

Listen to Short Audio and Video Message Excerpts

To enable you to have access to our message audio and video, we have begun to create short audio messages of our messages, with short video chunks to follow shortly. Here are some messages with excerpts that you might enjoy listening to:

Subscribe to Our Weekly Sermon Podcast

We will soon begin to podcast John Piper’s weekly sermon. Keep an eye on our site for this and many other continuing improvements!
