Learn to Delight in Excellence

Philippians 1:9–11

Our neighborhoods need men and women who delight in beauty not pornography, excellence not crudity, Christ and not the world. In this lab, Pastor John helps us learn how to delight in what is excellent.

Principle for Bible Reading

Meditate on the Opposites

One way to meditate on a text is to ask what the inverse or opposite is. For example, when you are studying through Philippians 1:10, don’t merely meditate on what it means to approve what is excellent, but consider what it means to not approve what is excellent or to approve what is crude.

Study Questions

  1. How do you define excellence? What are examples of excellence?
  2. Paul prays that the Philippians may approve what is excellent (Philippians 1:10). What does that mean? How does Paul instruct us to do that?
  3. How can you feed your knowledge, love, and discernment this week?
