1 Peter 5:8

Stay Alert Against Satan

In this Lab, Pastor John reminds us how vital it is to remain spiritually awake and watchful.

Principle for Bible Reading

Meditate on the Opposites

One way to meditate on a text is to ask what the inverse or opposite is. For example, if you come across 1 Peter 5:8 and it tells you to be “sober-minded” and “watchful,” ask: what does it look like to not be drunken-minded and unwatchful?

Study Questions

  1. What does it mean to be “sober-minded” and “watchful” (1 Peter 5:8)? Is your life characterized by these terms?
  2. Where else does “sober-minded” occur in 1 Peter? How does this add to our understanding of what it means?
  3. Is a sober-minded, watchful life an anxious life of constantly looking out for the roaring devil? How do the surrounding verses help us answer this question?
