the following is an edited transcript of the audio.

What is your favorite hymn?

I used to say If Thou but Suffer God to Guide Thee. I learned it in German when I was over there, and it has a theology that is profound. And then I used to say that my next favorite was God moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform. He plants his footsteps in the sea, and rides upon the storm.

Now there are so many newer gospel laden contemporary songs that I love the sound of, songs that are coming from Sovereign Grace (the In Christ Alone kind of songs), that it would be hard for me to choose a favorite.

But, I think if I died right now—dropped dead before this is over, and Noel had to plan my funeral, I am pretty sure she would go back to the ones that have been with us for 41 years in our marriage. I sing to my daughter every night and I made up words to the tune If Thou but Suffer God to Guide Thee, so that one is still dear to me. At the same time, I love many of the new Christ-exalting, gospel-honoring, contemporary songs. Noel would probably stir one of those in.
