When You Want to Give Up

Jesus felt grief and sorrow. But he fought the darkness until God’s light shone through. In this lab, John Piper teaches us how to use God’s promises to fight in the same way.

Some questions to ask as you read and study:

  1. Have you ever been stuck in despair and discouragement? What have you tried to do to get out?
  2. Read Psalm 42:3–5. How does the psalmist battle his despondency? How does Jesus instruct us in John 14:1–3?
  3. Our sorrow becomes dangerous when it convinces us to give up. What are some promises covered in this lab that you can use to push back against hopelessness?

Principle for Bible Reading

What Did Jesus Do

When pondering the question, “How then shall we live?” the Scriptures are our obvious road map. But when we hear a command from God and wonder how we can practically apply it, we can be enlightened by asking how Jesus obeyed it.

How Jesus obeyed commands and how we ought to might not always be the same (because he is God and we are not). But searching for intersections between what God expects of us and Jesus’s life gets us thinking more about his amazing life and inclines us to give glory to the God-man for his perfect obedience on our behalf.
